6 Fantastic Purifying Plants for YOUR Office or Home

Take a look at this co-working space in Lisbon, Portugal that has over 1,000 plants of varying sizes in a bid to help those working there not only feel inspired by the green and luscious surround, but also reap the benefits of the powerful plants reducing toxins in the air and giving off oxygen.

We thought we'd list some plants that are fabulous to have in your office (or home!) that can help with productivity and health as well as making your space beautiful and green.

Barberton Daisy (Gerbera Jamesonii)

This flowering plant is very happy indoors and helps clear the air of trichloroethylene (a chemical used in dry cleaning) which makes it well suited in an office. At home keep this in your laundry room or bedroom. It is happiest in direct sunlight with well-drained soil. The flowers are red, yellow, orange or pink which makes it brighten up a space too!

Spider Plant (Chlorophytum Comosum)

Spider Plants are a common, easy-to-care-for plant for the home and office. But they are also fantastic for cleaning the air. They help combat carbon monoxide, xylene (found in petrol) and formaldehyde. They enjoy cool temperatures and indirect sunlight.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

These are also known as Mother-in-law's tongue and give out oxygen at night, making them the perfect office plant to help refresh the air for staff in the morning. At home they are great to have in the bedroom and will help you breathe better while you sleep. The Snake Plant also combats formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, toluene from the air.

Moth Orchids (Phalaenopsis spp.)

Like Snake Plants, Orchids give off oxygen at night so great for the office or bedroom. The Moth Orchid has also been found to deal with toluene well, which is found in shoe polish.

Red-Edged Dracaena (Dracaena Marginata)

This is a brilliant plant that is one of the most effective at removing pollutants, including formaldehyde (found in wallpaper and paints) and benzene (found in synthetic fibres and dyes). It grows slowly and works well in open spaces in the office, with moderate sunlight.

Chrysanthemum (Chrysantheium Morifolium)

Bright, beautiful and ready to combat a host of chemicals, Chrysanthemums are a great plant to have in the office - they work to get rid of xylene, formaldehyde, toluene and benzene - they are a colourful addition to an office and enjoy bright sunshine, so pop them by the window so they work their magic!
